Romsdalseggen

Ready for the most spectacular hike of your lifetime? Romsdalseggen offers fantastic views of mountains and fjords from start to finish. As you walk along the rough mountain edge, above the mist, and marvel at mighty peaks in every direction, you might just start to wonder if you have stepped into a real life fairytale.

With incredible views of Romsdalen, Trollveggen and Rauma River this is an experience you won't forget any time soon. This hike is definitely worth the effort, and thanks to the magnificent nature sights along the way the hours will just fly by.

Unforgettable Views ‍

This narrow and airy hike starts in Vengedalen in Isfjorden and ends in the centre of Åndalsnes. Romsdalseggen, brutally rising from the fjord and peaks, stretches 1,329 meters above sea level at the highest point. From the top of the ridge, you are rewarded with an unforgettable view of the mountains towering over Romsdalen.

Magical, mysterious, raw and rough – Romsdalseggen definitely let's you experience the dramatic western Norwegian nature at its very best. The 10 kilometer long hike takes about 5-8 hours to complete. You start off with an easy climb, before continuing to the next peak. The most dicey parts of the hike will be secured with a chain to ensure you get a safe and enjoyable hike.

The epic experiences at Romsdalseggen are many and mighty. Treat yourself with a panoramic view of Romsdalshorn, Isterdalen and Isfjorden. Wave to the famous mountains, the King, Queen and Bishop as you go. Experience Trollveggen, Europe's highest vertical rock wall, up close. Gaze over to Dovrefjell and Sunndalsfjella in southern direction. Turn around and get a glimpse at the Atlantic Ocean in the west.

A Journey for the Experienced Hiker

The fantastic views are definitely a reward you have to work for – this is a long and demanding hike that requires you to be in good physical shape. Most of us will definitely feel the relentless 960 metre climb in more than one place. But when you know you’ll get to experience the most beautiful mountain landscape in Norway, it’s a small price to pay. This hike is so eventful that you hardly notice the hours passing as you make your way through the steep and rough terrain.

Walk Above the Mist

Sometimes you’ll even be able to walk above the mist along the rough ridge, really letting you experience the powerful nature of Western Norway.

At the end of the ridge you will find Nesaksla, with Eggen Restaurant and the Romsdalen Gondola, before the hike continues down to Åndalsnes via Rampestreken. Note that it is not recommended to walk in the opposite direction due to the narrow paths.

When is the Best Time to go?

The season starts when the snow disappears (approximately from June), and lasts until the snow comes back in the autumn.

If you are bringing children, we reccommend they are at least 10 years old and that they have some previous hiking experience. You can also bring a dog along, but it may need assistance on the roughest parts. Remember to keep your four-legged companion on a leash!

Nesaksla, the Romsdalen Gondola and Eggen Restaurant

When you reach Nesaksla, the mountain stretching 708 meters above the blue fjord, you can return to Åndalsnes via Rampestreken or take the gondola back down. Norway's longest skylift transports you 1,679 meters while you enjoy the majestic views. Before making your way down, you can also treat yourself to an exquisite dining experience at Eggen Restaurant.

At this restaurant you can enjoy a local menu accompanied by spectacular mountain views in all directions. Kick back and treat yourself to a nice meal after a long hike.

Getting There

You can park your car at the Romsdalseggen car park in Åndalsnes. This is the closest car park when walking back down from Rampestreken or when taking the gondola back down. This car park is a four minute walk to the bus station, Norsk Tindesenter and the Romsdalen Gondola. The Romsdalseggen Bus has daily departures throughout the summer. See updated information about parking in Åndalsnes.
