The Arctic Train: The Ofoten Line

A beautiful journey

Enjoy the views of towering mountains, dramatic waterfalls and the beautiful Arctic fjord. The train will make plenty of stops along the way to ensure you get the most of the experience. You can also download the "Voice of Norway" app and listen to the history of the area you drive through.

The Ofoten Line

Departing from the train station in Narvik, we will take you on a fantastic train journey. Witness the engineering marvels of tunnels and bridges that wind through the challenging but scenic Arctic landscapes. Combine fantastic views of the ice-blue fjord in Narvik, towering mountains and dramatic waterfalls with its historical facts, presented by your guide on board. The final destination of this roundtrip is the Swedish border town Bjørnfjell, where we will take a short stop and eventually turn back to Narvik.

More than just a train ride

The Ofoten line (“Ofotbanen”) stretches up to 43 kilometers from Narvik to the Swedish Border (Bjørnfjell), where it connects with the Swedish Ore Line ("Malmbanan"). Necessary to transport iron-ore from the mines in Kiruna to the ice-free port of Narvik, the construction of the trainline began in the late 19th century. By employing over 5000 “rallers” (skilled laborers), using innovative engineering techniques in order to cross the challenging mountain terrains, create bridges, tunnels and steep inclines, the Ofoten railway officially opened in 1902. Not long after, the line was of significant strategic importance during WWII: The Battle of Narvik in 1940 was fought in part to control the iron ore supply, vital for the war industry.

Chase the Northern Lights

Witch a winter plentiful of clear skies and solar activity Narvik is a great destination for experiencing the Northern Lights. During evening you can board the Northern Lights Train and travel along the Ofoten Line on the search for the glorious streaks of colourful light. The Northern Lights Train transports you high up in the mountains, away from the light pollution caused by street and city lights.

Our destination is Katterat, located 373 meters above sea level. It’s completely off the road network, making it one of the darkest places in the region to search for the Aurora. At Katterat station, we’ll step off the train into the stillness of the wilderness, gathering around a cozy campfire under the open sky.

A spacious lavvu nearby provides additional warmth and shelter, creating the ideal atmosphere for enjoying the moment. Your host will serve hot drinks and a snack to enjoy as we wait for the northern lights to appear, making the moment even more comfortable and magical.
