Tromso – The Paris of the North

Travelers in the nineteenth-century were blown away by Tromø’s women, fashion, food and culture. In admiration they dubbed Tromso “The Paris of the North”. There’s always a lot going on in Tromso, from exciting restaurants to numerous festivals, museums and cultural events, so no matter your preferences, you should be able to find some sort of entertainment to keep you busy. Around the year 1900 the poet Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, who wrote the lyrics to Norway’s national anthem, told his wife that Tromso is "nothing but champagne and spectacle."

Champagne and spectacle

The late nights are your choice, but make sure you stay long enough to have plenty of options. There’s always a lot going on in Tromso and you don't want to miss out on any attractions or events simply because you didn’t stay that extra day. Tromso is an active cultural city with major, interesting events happening almost every month. The city has more restaurants per capita than any other Norwegian city and there’s plenty of different festivals to accommodate anyone and everyone. Throughout the year you can take part in an international film festival, Northern Light festivals, the sami week, reindeer races and numerous music festivals. There is also plenty of experience based activities happening in Tromso, like dog sledding, reindeer tours and Northern Lights trips.

The rich cultural Northern life

When you think of Northern Norway and Tromso, your thoughts might go to raw nature, the northern lights and dog sleds, but Tromso is much more than that. Dubbed "The Paris of the North", Tromso is a national treasure offering modern and traditional activities, exciting restaurants, varied nightlife and bustling cultural activities. When you visit Tromso, you get the whole package.

In addition to the international film and music festivals you can visit the cinemas Aurora and Verdensteateret, Tromso's cultural centre and the many museums such as the Polar Museum and Perspektivet. The lovely churches Arctic Cathedral and Tromso Cathedral are all open year round and can be visited at any time.
